Annual Washington Week Events and Prayer Breakfast April 27, 2026
The NRCCC annual prayer breakfast has always been a chance for friends and new colleagues to meet for support and prayer in the struggle to care for God’s creation. As members have been aging, the numbers of attendees have been shrinking, but their spirits of service have not.
This year we took inspiration from the heroism of the citizens in Minneapolis, particularly the sacrifices of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The community of response on behalf of our immigrant neighbors was based in networks and relationships built in the movements of solar gardens, community gardens, housing and food for the less affluent of caring people of varied faiths and spiritual perspectives. The ICE invasion was just one more challenge they had risen to meet.
We honored Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobbs as the 2026 NRCCC Steward of Creation. Rabbi Fred is leader leading Jewish and Interfaith efforts to work on climate change and other environmental issues. David Krantz, who introduced Rabbi Dobbs, brought Krantz ‘s infant daughter as the youngest NRCCC member and one of the reasons we were all striving to protect our world for the future.
One of the table conversation topics was how to move forward with the NRCCC. No clear direction was established but some varied perspectives were shared on the values of meeting annually, and perhaps even extending the time into a full day or retreat. Others suggested partnering with other organizations and also establishing a steering committee to evaluate options. That is an ongoing discussion.
After the breakfast some members joined the Moral Mondays Movement, with the Poor People’s Campaign, to protest the war. Reverend Dr. William Barber II, clearly enduring some pain in limb but not in spirit, gave a rousing inspiring speech calling on people to return each Monday in DC and elsewhere and with others to grow as an influential people’s movement.
Other activities included the traditional going to Capitol Hill for advocacy moved by the Spirit and science. This year the push was to. stop the faux misleading “Save Our Sequoias” Bill that tacitly is a permission to log these heritage trees within the National Park. Members also worked to stop amendments that would gut the Endangered Species Act (ESA). In the 1990’s, NRCCC members helped thwart a similar attempt to derail the ESA that has saved species like the iconic bald eagle. NRCCC calls upon all people to courageous determination to expose and oppose the greed and corruption that would degrade God’s beautiful wondrous creation. God tasks humans to nurture and protect and enhance all creation including species, waters, air, atmosphere, lands, humanity in reverence and honor to The Creator from Whom all blessings flow.
